The Challenge

Superdot created the "Deutschlandkarte" for some issues of the weekly ZEITMagazin. These thematically different maps show facts about Germany. The focus in this project is on continuing the previous branding brief from Die Zeit, working with journalists and developing a modular easy-to-understand visual language.

The Outcome

We implemented the datasets processed for the "Deutschlandkarte" as thematic maps for the weekly issues 17 "Orte, die wie Tiere heissen“ & 33 "Wo steht die Berliner Mauer?“. For the first issue, we developed a new geometric icon system to represent each type of animal. The summary statistics are located outside the map. On the second map, the countable chart types are combined with the location on the map.

The Impact

With the appropriate preparation of a social media package containing all image formats, Superdot's social media reach record was broken right at the start. The spread and interest in the relatively special topic was great by our standards. This project showed us that there is still a lot of potential to aesthetically combine thematic maps with statistics.
